LETTERS
From Issue #10
Editor's Letter

I hate to run. I know “hate” is a strong word, but I mean it. I tried it before and got up to 5K, hated every step of the way, and gave up.

At some point I started to wonder why. I mean, what’s to hate? Fresh air, great cardiovascular workout, “me” time? The more I thought about it, the more I realized it was the “me” thing that seemed to be the problem. Running reflected who I was: I stopped when I didn’t feel like doing things anymore, I didn’t try harder, I didn’t push myself or step out of my comfort zone—I wimped out when the going got tough.

But, no more. I figure you just have to wake up and say, “Today’s the day,” and mean it. So here goes.

My goal is to run a half-marathon in the spring. That’s almost 21K. I know it’s winter so it probably seems crazy to start running now, but I can always find excuses if I look for them.

I’m definitely an amateur and will be looking for advice along the way. If you’ve got any words of wisdom on how I can get through this I’d love to hear from you. Or drop me a few lines of encouragement because it won’t be easy to change my I-want-to-quit-now attitude overnight.

I’ll be keeping a journal and posting weekly progress reports on our site, so feel free to check out how I’m doing.

Wish me luck!

Letters to Editor

After I read Faze I did not feel self-conscious or worthless or a slave to the here and now. I actually felt the complete opposite; I felt I could do anything and even make a difference in some cases! Thank you for believing that teens are more than just dieting and lipstick tips.
Tiffany F., SK

What’s up with you guys? You seem to have it together in most of the magazine and then you throw in Ed the Sock! I’ve seen his late-night show and if anyone’s got a bad attitude that we don’t need to promote, it’s his. Get rid of him!
Dayna R., 14, Ottawa

I want more Ed! He should have an entire section to do his thing. He’s totally right on and cracks me up.
Kevin M., 15, Alberta

Great article on jeans [Getting Into Jeans, BTS 2002]. It’s nice to read something about fashion that isn’t all about looks.
Sue N., 16, Cyberspace

Props to you guys. I’d never seen a teen mag. that had global issues and news sections until I picked up Faze. It’s a good read. Thanks.
Michael R., 17, Vancouver

Your article on 13 and Married [BTS 2002] is so biased. As usual, just because we don’t understand something or agree with it we bash it. My grandparents got married when they were 16, through an arranged marriage, and loved each other until they died. It may not work for everyone, but it’s not the “nightmare” you suggest.
Ashti K., 17, Toronto

The article “Mirror, Mirror” [Summer 2002] talks about loving yourself for being you…and then there is a picture of an image-perfect girl who is skinny and fit. This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. Wasn’t the article about inner beauty not outer beauty??
Kyla, 14, Ontario

What’s up with just one page on Avril [BTS 2002]?  She’s amazing and should have been your feature story.
Amanda D., 15, NS
