On October 18, 2011, Jay Manuel showed his latest collection for Sears Canada to a packed house under the LG Fashion Week tents. A world-renowned makeup artist, creative director and television personality, Jay draws from his international experience working with the best in the industry to create stylish, affordable fashion. His S/S 2012 line was inspired by the modern jet-set lifestyle and expressive 1930s prints.
Hits: Jay’s designs were sleek and simple. Too many ‘affordable’ lines attempt to make up for their lack of luxury with misguided details and flourishes. Jay kept it focused and fashionable with on-trend pieces to be worn together or effortlessly mixed with other labels.
White pants, sheer blouses, woven sweaters and asymmetrical black tops appeared in almost every runway show this season, but will be sold by Sears for much, much less. If you’re on a budget, Jay’s collection is full of great frugal finds. Outerwear is definitely a strong point for Jay; favourite pieces included a colour blocked denim trench and faux leather drape jacket. These foundational staples are best paired with glam accessories to liven up the look.
Misses: Fedoras. These hats have lived, died, been resurrected by Justin Timberlake and thankfully faded away again. Now if only Jay Manuel would let them rest in peace. They look good on the models, but are past their heyday. It’s high time for some new headwear trends.
Celeb Factor: Somali-Canadian supermodel Yasmin Warsame walked the show, eliciting applause and cheers each time she came down the runway. Proving even the best fall sometimes, Yasmin slipped on the fog-slicked runway, but quickly recovered with a helping hand from the front row. The experienced gal shook it off and rocked the rest of the show!
